About

This site is the home of a cooperative weather observation and reporting system known as CPS, or Chase Positioning System,  and the internet display of these observations by the Mobile Mesonet System. The objective of the system is to provide real-time position, weather data, images, and storm reports from mobile weather observers in the vicinity of severe weather.

The observers use proprietary client software that collects data from GPS receivers, cameras, weather instruments, and manual entry. This data is uploaded once a minute. Since the upload is based on GPS provided time, all observations are synchronized for all observers. The data is sent via the observer’s internet connection to the mobilemesonet server where it is formatted for display in Google Maps, Google Earth, and GRLevel3 radar software. It is then archived for future use by researchers. If the observer does not have an internet connection then the data is stored until an internet connection is established.
